Frequently Asked Questions

What is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It means accumulating enough wealth so that investment returns can cover your living expenses, allowing you to retire well before 60.

What is the FIRE number?

Your FIRE number = Annual Expenses × 25 (based on the 4% safe withdrawal rate). If you spend ₹12 lakh/year, your FIRE number is ₹3 crore. This is based on the Trinity Study.

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule states you can safely withdraw 4% of your retirement portfolio annually (adjusted for inflation) with a high probability of not running out of money over 30 years. For India, some suggest 3-3.5% due to higher inflation.

What are the types of FIRE?

Lean FIRE: bare minimum expenses. Regular FIRE: comfortable lifestyle. Fat FIRE: maintaining a wealthy lifestyle. Coast FIRE: enough invested that you can stop saving but keep working to cover expenses.

Is FIRE realistic in India?

Yes, but factor in higher inflation (6-7%), healthcare costs, and longer retirement period. A safer withdrawal rate of 3-3.5% is recommended. Having health insurance and an emergency fund is essential.
