Frequently Asked Questions
What is CTC vs in-hand salary?
CTC (Cost to Company) includes everything the company spends on you — basic, HRA, allowances, PF, gratuity, insurance. In-hand salary is what you actually receive after deductions like PF, tax, and professional tax.
How is basic salary determined?
Basic salary is typically 40-50% of CTC. A higher basic means higher PF contribution (good for retirement) but also higher tax. Companies often keep basic lower to optimize tax.
What is professional tax?
Professional tax is a state-level tax on salaried individuals. It varies by state — Maharashtra charges ₹200/month, Karnataka ₹200/month. Maximum is ₹2,500/year. It is deductible from income tax.
What components are tax-free?
HRA (if you pay rent), LTA (for travel, up to limits), food coupons (up to ₹50/meal), NPS employer contribution, and reimbursements like phone/internet bills are partially or fully tax-free.
How is employer PF calculated?
Employer contributes 12% of basic salary to PF. Of this, 8.33% goes to EPS (pension, capped at ₹15,000 basic) and 3.67% goes to EPF. Employee also contributes 12% of basic.
