What is STT?
Securities Transaction Tax is levied on every purchase/sale of securities on recognized stock exchanges. It was introduced in 2004 to simplify taxation and reduce tax evasion in capital markets.
What are the current STT rates?
Equity delivery: 0.1% on both buy and sell. Intraday: 0.025% on sell only. Futures: 0.02% on sell. Options: 0.1% of option premium on sell (increased from 0.0625% in 2024).
What are exchange transaction charges?
NSE charges 0.00297% for equity and 0.03503% for options. BSE charges 0.00375% for equity. These are charged on turnover and are separate from brokerage.
What is stamp duty on trades?
Stamp duty is charged by the state government on share transactions. For delivery buy: 0.015%, for delivery sell: 0.003%. For intraday and F&O, rates are lower.
Can I claim STT as a deduction?
If you declare trading income as business income, STT paid can be claimed as a deduction. For capital gains income, STT is not deductible but the cost of acquisition is adjusted.
