Frequently Asked Questions
What is TDS?
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is a system where the payer deducts tax before making payment. It ensures tax is collected at the point of income generation, reducing tax evasion.
When should I file TDS returns?
TDS returns must be filed quarterly: Q1 by July 31, Q2 by October 31, Q3 by January 31, Q4 by May 31. Late filing attracts ₹200/day penalty under Section 234E.
What if excess TDS is deducted?
You can claim a refund by filing your income tax return. The excess TDS will be reflected in your Form 26AS. Refunds are typically processed within 4-6 months.
What is Form 15G/15H?
Form 15G (for individuals below 60) and 15H (for senior citizens) are declarations that your total income is below the taxable limit, requesting the deductor not to deduct TDS.
What if PAN is not provided?
If the payee does not provide PAN, TDS is deducted at 20% or the applicable rate, whichever is higher. This is to incentivize PAN compliance.
